The Easter long weekend has long been synonymous with getting away. More often than not, this is the time of year where we find ourselves retreating from the bustle of our everyday lives, celebrating the break with friends and family. Here, Julia Ashwood returns to Live With Us, accompanied by Matt and Delilah Bee, as well as their friends Mia, Jasson, Ziggy and Taro.

We follow the two lovely families on their trip to the gorgeous Stradbroke Island, found in Moreton Bay just off the coast of Queensland. Here, in part one of The Weekend Away series, you will find postcards from their adventure as they navigate the island together, and below Julia shares a few of her favourite travelling memories.

For a lot of us, the Easter break means getting out of town – could you please share some of your fondest memories of Easter in your youth?

Julia: “Growing up on a farm by the beach in Lennox Head, it was actually quite hard to convince my Dad to go anywhere. However for anyone who has ever spent an Easter on the NSW North Coast, they would know that it's a pretty special part of the world. It's about cool nights and warm days, spectacular sunsets over the lake and marshmallows on a stick, made crispy and gooey on a beach fire. These are my greatest childhood memories.”

You travel a lot for your journal, The Vista. What is it you love most about heading out of town?

Julia: “Farm duties really took precedent over holidays in my youth, I didn't travel further than my aunt’s place in Newcastle. Once I got the travel bug I was off and you just couldn't stop me! Nothing makes my tummy more giddy than jumping on a plane and heading somewhere new. I love diving head first into another world - the food, the music the way people dress and communicate. Every destination brings a unique adventure, a chance to make friendships and a new appreciation of the world around us.”

Spending time in nature is the perfect way to reset, how does it make you feel?

Julia: “In a word, refreshed. A bushwalk, a salty swim, taking in a vista on a giant granite plateau - nature seems to teach you how to breathe again.”

What is the best part about travelling with friends?

Julia: “The moments of silence. I know this may sound terrible - and I equally love the moments when we chat and chat till we are blue in the face - but those moments of silence when no one feels like they have to say a thing, we're all just are happy and so comfortable in each other’s company. On a side note, those moments of silence become a lot rarer when you have children!”
