Familiar with the phrase go bold or go home? With event season upon us, it’s all about finding those statement pieces that make an impact. Recently we had the divine Talisa Sutton, Creative Director of Badlands Journal, into Country Road HQ. She joined our Head of Design, Maria Rinaldi-Cant, who shared her vision for the new season alongside a few key pieces.

“This collection is less about being trend-savvy, rather, looking for elegant statement pieces. It’s about bringing back the natural fibres and elevated elements. It’s a really modern take on event dressing.”

“When designing, we think about wardrobe building. While it’s lovely to have beautiful statement pieces, we also want you to be able to pair them with whatever you already have in your wardrobe. For example, here we styled Talisa in our beautiful linen suit back with our leather thong, the thought being that you can dress these pieces up and down effortlessly.”

“The team and I look ahead from a colour point of view – which in this case is the chocolate. I love looking at different textures: I love the boucle suiting for this reason, the finish creates a three-dimensional feeling to the fabric.”

“We’re very much into the details of everything, the buttons, the stitches, the quality of the leather. We want to design pieces that you’ll love forever, styles that will always be at home in your wardrobe.”

“I love a statement piece, but I prefer it to be uncomplicated. For example with our chocolate dress, the statement is the single, volume sleeve. The rest of the silhouette is simple: it helps define her waist, and shows off her shoulder, keeping the handwriting quite feminine.”
